Enjoying your own dinner party

The thought of entertaining can be overwhelming.
The prep alone can be time consuming; theme, invites, set up..and when the event comes, do you get to even enjoy it or are you flying around greeting, feeding and making sure the event flows nicely.

Tips For First Time Party Hosts
By: Danielle Brooks

Hosting a party is a quite a big task especially if it is your first time. It can be very intimidating and stressful. You can easily go over your budget and make a few mistakes here and there. However, preparing a party need not be a hassle. In fact, it can be a fun part of the party as well.

When hosting a party, first you need to identify what type of party it is going to be. Are you going to host a formal party where people need to be in cocktail dresses and suits, or an informal party where people can come dressed in jeans and casual attire. Is it going to be a big party of more than 50 people or a small, intimate gathering of close friends and relatives? Are you having a party to celebrate an occasion or you just want to have a simple get together. How big is the space of the venue? Most importantly, you want to establish how much your budget is.

When you already know the type of party you will be having, you have to pick a date, location, and the time. It is very important that you have these matters already taken care of so that you will know how many people you are going to invite, and how you are going to invite them.

For formal parties, invitation cards are in order. You can either have them made by a professional or you can create them yourself. If you are hosting an informal party, you can simply send your invitations through email, or you can invite them over the phone or by person. Whichever way you choose, it is important that you invite them about two or three weeks in advance. This will give you enough time to make all the preparations according to the number of guests and also to give them enough time to fix their schedules. Two or three days before the party, be sure to call everybody on your guest list to confirm if they will be attending or not.

One of the easiest parties to host is a potluck where the guests will also bring food and beverages. When you are planning on hosting this type of party, you should also prepare enough food for the guests. This is especially true if you are hosting a dinner party where most people are likely going to bring their favorite wine, salad, or dessert.

To avoid cramming and pressure on the day of your party, you should start the preparation a day or two before the scheduled event. This will give you enough time to prepare the food and the venue, and take care of any last minute problems with arrangements and other things. Be sure that you have enough plates, spoons and forks, glasses, and table napkins. You also want to make sure that you have enough containers for the trash so that you will not have to clean out the trash every now and then during the party.
